It is fall why does my yard have weeds?

Many homeowners are noticing weeds in their turf this time of year. It is very common to see crabgrass and other weeds in your lawn right now. The pre-emergent that was put down to control weeds in the summer is designed to break down by now to make way for seed germination. Fescue turf should we aerated, fertilzed and seeded in September / October to encourage new growth and strenghen existing grass. If the pre-emergent weed control was still active it would not be able to discriminate between grass seed and weed seed. The good news is that as the temperatures start to drop you will see the crabgrass dying off.

With good spring and summer applications of pre-emergent it will help prevent the crabgrass from coming back until next fall.

Weeds are the price you have to pay for new, green grass.

Color Landscapes is proud to announce that PD Ross, Residential Designer, has passed the NC Landscape Contractor’s exam. He joins Michael Dickey, President, and Chris Breedlove, Construction Division Manager, in passing this prestigous exam.

In the state of NC no person or orgnaization are allowed to say they are Landscape Contractors without passing this exam. The program was created to distinguish the professionals in the landscape industry and allow homeowners and businesses to know who they can trust to perform their landscape projects.

To become a NC Landscape Contractor you have to pass two written tests and become a Certified Plantsman.

Paver vs. Concrete or Asphalt

Many homes have a concrete or asphalt driveway and a concrete slab for a back patio. The down side is both concrete and asphalt fail. Depending on the base, weather conditions and quality of the materials the concrete or asphalt both can crack in as little as 6 months.

A reliable and durable alternative is pavers. Concrete pavers have many advantages over asphalt and concrete.

It’s Time for Spring Flowers

“April showers bring May flowers”

This old wives tale is correct. May is the time of year to plant spring annuals. There are many colorful options for spring!

Common spring annuals include: Begonias, Impatiens, Salvia, Vinca, Lantana, Petunias and tropical plants like Banana trees and Elephant Ears.

When planting spring annuals it is important to properly prepare the plant beds.

Here are some basic steps for bed preparation:

1 – Remove fall annuals

2- Spread granular fertilizers on top of the bed (14-14-14, bone meal, blood meal, 10-10-10 are all good options)

3 – Use a tiller to break up the top 6-8 inches of soil and to get the fertilizer mixed into the soil

4- Plant your new spring annuals

5- Cover bed with fresh mulch

6 – Water your new flowers!

If the plant bed does not have regular watering from an irrigation system, the flowers will need to be watered at least twice a week for the first two weeks.

Color Landscapes Open House April 29, 2011 Date Changed

Color Landscapes is hosting an Open House at the Design Center on April 29th from 5pm to 8pm. The event will feature pizza made in a Chicago Brick Oven, a moon bounce, live music, a corn hole tournament, the Color Landscapes race car and prizes and giveaways!

50 visitors will walk away with Crape Myrtles and one lucky winner will get $1,000 off a $5,000 project!
