Yes we know that it is the middle of winter and landscapes generally are hibernating. But, if you look really hard you can find magnificent treasures that put on one heck of a show in the winter time. All though our choices are not as plentiful for color in the winter time, they are still as beautiful. One of the best examples is Hellebores, also known as the Lenton Rose.

This is a great evergreen plant, almost considered a ground cover that blooms in the middle of the winter. They have really large bell shape flowers that range from pink to white to red. Another group of plants that are easily overlooked in the landscape in the winter are Witch Hazels.

There are many different varieties in all shapes, sizes, and colors as well. There are also many early bloomers in the spring time. Camellia Japonicas and Red Buds are all loaded with buds that are waiting to pop. Now is also a very good time to fertilize you winter and spring blooming plants with a slow release fertilizer.
