This is my first post as the new Landscape Architect at Color Landscapes! I am very excited to be a part of their team and also about the new possibilities that exist in the Burlington and  Raleigh areas. Please feel free to give me a call at (336) 213-5820 if you have an outdoor project you would like to me to take a look at- this is a great time of year for planting, or creating that special outdoor room you have always wanted! At each post, I will also try to highlight different popular plant materials I get asked about from time to time. Those really cool, out of the ordinary, or just plain ‘You cant kill it’ plant I would like to showcase. This first post, I would like to highlight. . . . MUHLY GRASS! Please read on below:

This time of year I repeatedly get asked “What IS that beautiful pink grass?” Well, the answer is Muhly Grass!  You may have seen it in drifts along Bryan   Boulevard in Greensboro, or in foundation or subdivision entrance plantings! This versatile and beautiful perennial is used frequently in our southern landscapes and for good reason!

Pink Muhly Grass, Muhlenbergia capillaris, is a must have for the low maintenance garden and is a fantastic source of late-season color. When summer is winding down and all the blooms from summers annuals and perennials are fading, pink Muhly Grass with its giant puffs of cotton candy pink like plumes is beginning its beautiful show!

This ornamental grass makes a great hedge, border, or in patio containers with color from spring to summer, but when it bursts free with its gorgeous pink plumes. It reaches 3 feet high and 3 feet wide, with a nicely cascading habit of foliage and unbelievably profuse blooms. Give it plenty of sunshine and good soil drainage, and it will do the rest, beautifully withstanding heat, humidity, drought, and poor soil! It does well in hot dry sandy sites and is very drought tolerant.
